Plant Sex Chromosomes: A Non-Degenerated Y?
Animal Y chromosomes have undergone chromosome-wide degeneration in response to a lack of recombination, and ancient Ys contain few functional genes. Recent research suggests that plant Y chromosomes may evolve differently and retain most of their ancestral genes.
متن کاملRapid Y degeneration and dosage compensation in plant sex chromosomes.
The nonrecombining regions of animal Y chromosomes are known to undergo genetic degeneration, but previous work has failed to reveal large-scale gene degeneration on plant Y chromosomes. Here, we uncover rapid and extensive degeneration of Y-linked genes in a plant species, Silene latifolia, that evolved sex chromosomes de novo in the last 10 million years. Previous transcriptome-based studies ...
متن کاملPlant Evolution: Modern Sex Chromosomes
The first detailed map has been produced of a plant chromosome carrying sex-determining genes. The new data show that, in papaya, these genes lie in a quite extensive non-recombining region. This region is nevertheless a small part of the papaya genome compared with other male-specific genome regions, such as mammalian Y chromosomes.
متن کاملSex chromosomes: how X-Y recombination stops
In many animal and plant species, sex determination involves an homologous but heteromorphic chromosome pair, the X and Y sex chromosomes. These chromosomes generally differ greatly in length and sequence content, except in the ‘pseudoautosomal’ region, where X-Y recombination still occurs in male meiosis. In a pioneering study, Lahn and Page [1] investigated the highly differentiated and nonre...
متن کاملSex Determination: Primitive Y Chromosomes in Fish
Recent analyses of the chromosomal regions that determine male development in sticklebacks and medaka have revealed several features associated with incipient Y chromosome evolution, including suppressed crossing over and the accumulation of repetitive DNA.
